Obituary For Dorothy B. Davis

Dorothy B. Davis, longtime resident of Hagerstown, passed away Thursday, April 28. She was 92 and under the loving care of her daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and John Cooker of Asheville NC. She taught Business Education at Boonsboro High School from 1968 to 1989 and took great pride and satisfaction in her career there. She was dedicated to making a positive impact on her students and appreciated all of them. Some of her teaching colleagues became good friends, and continued into her retirement. She thought of them as part of her extended family, especially Dotty Piccolomini.

She was born in Union City, NJ and received her teaching degree from Ryder College. First teaching in Teaneck she continued at Lakenheathe, England when her husband Tom Moore Davis was stationed there after World War II. While there she was able to travel extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East. Upon returning to the states they settled in Hagerstown and she began teaching at Boonsboro.

In retirement Dot could be found any day of the week at local Bingo games which gave her lots of fun and wonderful friends, especially her partner in crime Kim Hildebrand. She also loved to throw pool parties, or any party anytime of the year, particularly enjoying the company of her dear friends Kathryn Coleman and Barbara and Mike Rhoads. Her friendships were the most important thing in her life and she had many lifelong friends she survived except her dear Edith Andriola. She loved to play the slots at Charlestown. A devoted fan of Ole Blue Eyes Frank Sinatra she was listening to his songs until the end.

Until moving to Asheville in 2018 she was a dedicated member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Shepherdstown.

I want to share a memory of Dot. My Mother had just purchased a house in Front Royal Virginia and Dot came to visit us along with my Aunt Katherine and Uncle John. Dot acted as if she was in paradise sitting on the deck enjoying some nice red wine and something good to eat. I got the chance to draw her a picture as she lovingly told stories and laughed. We will all be blessed by your memory. Love, Anthony Gelwicks

I was so so blessed to have Dottie has a colleague and a wonderful friend at BHS for many years. She had a great sense of humor and took life just as it came. Her daughter was her greatest treasure and her life as a teacher was, indeed, a source of joy for her--she was a most excellent educator and highly favored by students. Rest well, my friend.

Dear Friends, I live in Asheville, and attended high school at Boonsboro HS in the early 1970's. Although I never had any classes with Mrs. Davis, she was well loved by students, and my sister said your mom often stayed to help her with shorthand! Times have sure changed. What hasn't changed, though, is the importance of caring, competent and dedicated teachers. Your mom was all of that and more. I am holding you in loving light and prayers. I'm thankful for Mrs. Davis and the wonderful long life she lived. Mindy Barrons Allen

I worked with Dot for many years at Boonsboro High School and we carpooled during the gas rationing and she even helped us find a house to rent in her neighborhood when we moved back to Hagerstown. Her New York stories were the highlight of hours in the faculty room. Rest in peace, Dot. Dee Shumaker

Dot was truly a kind soul, and I'm betting she's looking for Sinatra on Gods beautiful shore; singing NEW YORK NEW YORK. I can hear her now. Her antics, laughter, and stubbornness gave me great joy. I'm going to miss her forever.
