Obituary For Kathryn Hammond Foster

Kathryn Hammond Foster, 73, of Flat Rock, North Carolina, passed away on August 22, 2022. Kathy was born on April 4, 1949 to the late Robert Avery Hammond and Dorothy Bucklew Hammond of Saratoga Springs, NY.
She grew up with three siblings—Ellen, Avery and Nancy—with whom she shared a love of music and nature. As the family of a United Methodist minister, they moved frequently but learned to develop deep roots in their community wherever it may be. This skill would become a gift to Kathy and all that would know her throughout her days.

Kathy attended West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, WV, where she received a BA in Elementary Education, and met her husband, Stephen Eugene Foster, of Gassaway, WV. During their 52 years of marriage, these two would share 16 different addresses, including Illinois, Texas, Connecticut and New Jersey. They would return to Buckhannon, West Virginia, to spend 17 years before moving to Flat Rock, NC in 2017.

In addition to pursuing work in elementary education, Kathy was deeply involved in community groups everywhere she lived. She served with United Methodist Women, led the youth choirs of several churches, was an active mentor and leader in Literacy Volunteers, took part in P.E.O. International, and shared her alto voice in both church and regional choirs, including the Quincy Symphony Chorus, Buckhannon Choral Society, and Hendersonville Chorale. She loved to sing, travel with her family, and bring a smile and a laugh to every room she entered.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Steve, her daughters, Amy Foster of Atlanta, GA, and Lori Petermann of Bozeman, MT, and grandson, Henry Stewart Foster, of Atlanta, GA.

A memorial service will be held at Hope United Methodist Church, 2443 Spartanburg Hwy, East Flat Rock, NC on Sunday, August 28th at 3 pm. A second service will be held in Buckhannon, WV at a later date in October.

Dear Foster Family - I met Kathy through my association with the KA COH. I found her to be the most endearing person I've ever known. She was a delight to be around and my partner in crime when in Lexington, Va. I shall miss her.
