Norton Merle Carey, Jr. passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norton Sr. and Alice Carey, a son, Robert Allen Carey, and two grandchildren, Kristal Carey and James Carey, Jr.

Norton was born and raised in Joliet, Illinois where he met the love of his life, his wife of 63 years, Wannetta Rose Carey. He proudly worked for IBM for 39 years before retiring to the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. Norton was an extremely kind, loving, brilliant man whose smile would light up any room. To most people, he was Norton, but to me, it's Poppy. He was truly the best man to ever walk this planet. Whether it was sitting on his lap watching "COPS" on Saturday nights, the many wrestling matches he always let Heather and I win, the countless days racing at Adventure Landing, or him showing us up at a game of putt putt, he was the center of my favorite childhood memories. He will always hold a very large special place in my heart. I miss you Poppy

Norton was my friend for almost 40 years. We laughed a lot over things that made our friendship stronger. For my last visit with him, I brought my lunch and told him what was going on in my life and in the world. He was no longer responsive but the nurse said that they believed that hearing was the last to go. I like to think that he heard me and was smiling at the appropriate times. I shall miss my dear friend.

I have loved you for 74 years, because that's how long I've been on earth! I remember when you taught me how to ride a bike! I'll never forget you, and I'll never forget your soulmate Wannetta Rose
