Obituary For Phyllis Long Culver

Phyllis Long Culver, 90, of Asheville, NC. Peacefully on March 19, 2024, at Universal Health Care of Fletcher NC, a nursing home, after five months there due to severe Parkinson's Disease and difficulty seeing, hearing, talking and walking.

She was born in New York, NY, to Frederick Long and Evelyn Baird Long, both now deceased. She later lived in Short Hills, NJ; Annandale VA; Arlington, VA; Richmond, VA; and Asheville, NC.

She had two years of college. She worked at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York in the admissions department. Later she was a computer analyst for Sperry Univac and the Department of the Army. Lastly, she was an administrative assistant at the VCU School of Nursing.

In her youth she was a painting artist and illustrated several magazine covers. She was a bookkeeper for several organizations. In her later life she was a leader in the board of her condominium association, and she also developed a strong interest in photography.

She was a lifelong lover of animals. She could get a bird to land on her shoulder and a squirrel to eat from her hand. She had a bunny and a number of cats over her lifetime.

Phyllis was a beloved wife and leader in our marriage. She knew how to deal with businesses and get what was fair. She chose with great taste most of the furnishings in our home. She was a dynamic person with many different talents and interests. I mostly agreed with her ideas because she was usually right, or on minor things felt more strongly than I. She set up the routines we lived by. We spent many happy hours together every day, eating meals and watching television shows. We enjoyed just holding hands. She always looked ahead and provided for the future. She suffered many different ailments and pains over her lifetime, but never complained: she just did all she could and bravely carried on, with my help.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Rolf Edward Culver of Asheville; and her daughter from a previous marriage, Jessica Space Pooley and husband Wayne and grandchildren Sarah Salomonsky -1 and Jacob Salomonsky -2, all of Richmond, VA; and nieces Jenny Culver -1 of Falls Church, VA and Mindy Culver -2 of Annandale, VA; and her special friend, Sara (Sally) Lopez of Nokomis, FL.

Here is a tribute from her friend Sally: To me, Phyllis is/was a real mentor, role model, and a warrior. She was my idol and always will be. There wasn't much she couldn't do. She was unbelievably artistic but could handle herself in the corporate world. Women weren't very welcome in the early days of computers. She was brainy and smart. She could read people and wasn't afraid to speak her mind. People respected her. She was funny and a great friend. I could spend hours with her with never a boring minute.

As was her wish, there will be no memorial service.
