Obituary For Robert Camille

Robert Camille, Sr., affectionately known by many as Jocko, passed May 7, 2024. A gentle and loving man, he is survived by his children and their spouses: Bernadette Camille and John Sarisky of Fairview, Robert Jr. and Cindy Camille of Dunn, Christina Long of Travelers Rest, and Tom and Tanya Camille of Woodfin; four grandchildren: Gus Camille and her husband, Nick Wicklund, Jack Camille, Camille Long, and Lana Camille.

Jocko was born in Sherman, Illinois, Oct 22, 1933. He lived on the family farm until he left to attend school at Coin Electric in Chicago. His expertise as an electronics specialist landed him a position with Army Intelligence, where, thanks to a fortuitous assignment trade, he was stationed in Germany.

While stationed in Germany, he met the love of his life and future wife, Helga. The two moved back to the US with their two children in 1959 and soon added two more children to the family. Helga passed away in 2020 after 63 years of marriage.

After moving back to the United States, Jocko secured a position with the Federal Aviation Administration. Career advancement allowed the family to see much of the country. They called many states home, including Illinois, Georgia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Puerto Rico. Jocko and the family eventually settled in western North Carolina almost 50 years ago.

Jocko was always tinkering, fixing and problem solving. No job was out of his area of expertise, earning him the nickname of the Jock Man. The rest of his life, he would be lovingly referred to as “Jocko”. There was nothing he couldn't fix or repair. After retiring from the FAA, Jocko spent his time building homes in the Asheville-Hendersonville area. He involved his whole family in these projects and instilled the same adventurous spirit and can-do attitude into his children and the later generation of grandkids.

A funeral mass will take place Friday, May 17, at 11:00 am at St Eugene‘s Catholic Church. A reception at the church will follow. The family would like to thank the skilled team at the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Mission Hospital for their excellent care. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Jocko's favorite charities, Wounded Warriors or Tunnel to Towers. Jocko had a soft spot for all things veteran related and this would make him smile.

Although I didn't KNOW Robert. I KNEW him by his walk, his wave, his presence in the N. Asheville neighborhood and as a neighbor of my parents, Bob & Peg Adams. My Mom would share her delicious homemade spaghetti with Robert whenever she cooked it. He was thought of with love and care. His presence in the neighborhood will be missed. Love & Prayers to family and friends. Anita Adams

We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Sometimes he may have appeared gruff, but in actuality Robert was a very warm and kind man. He had a great laugh and genuine smile. And one of my favorite memories of Robert was just knowing he was out there working on his gardens or his lawn, while I was out there tending to my gardens. He was such a generous and helpful neighbor and he would always come over and say hello and give me an encouraging word or offer a handy tool or some wise advice. I know he will be missed. I wish you all peace at this time. Eileen & Paul Kostock
