Obituary For Sarah "Betty" Elizabeth Fugate

Sarah Elizabeth (Betty) Fugate died on Friday, November 5, 2021. She was born February 4, 1930, in Esserville, Virginia, the daughter of the late Charles Paul Fugate and Ida Flanary Banner Fugate.

Betty grew up in Wise, Virginia, and graduated from Emory & Henry College with a double major in English and History. She continued her studies in Europe and at Columbia University in New York. She married Robert Lee Cury in 1955. She was a lifelong Democrat, a member of the League of Women Voters, the National Association of Women, and the American Civil Liberties Union. She was a founding member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. She also founded the Verna Mae Barr Scholarship Fund at Longwood University, Farmville, Virginia. She loved her family, bridge, tennis, antiques, and books.

Surviving Betty are her three children, Alexandra Cury, Christopher T. Cury (Jiaping Ma), and Adrianne Cury (William A. Underwood); granddaughters, Raleigh Mitchell Cury, Katie Underwood Maschoff (John), and Yu Shi, grandson Will Underwood (Jen); great-grandsons, Noah, Jack, Teddy, and Liam, sister Jo F. Harris Lozier and her family; and many beloved cousins.

A private graveside service will take place at the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, Betty requested donations to the Verna Mae Barr Scholarship, Longwood University, 201 High Street, Farmville, VA 23909.
